What you need to do at claim time
What will happen after that?
- Your first duty is to mitigate the loss. This means that you must take the necessary steps to minimise the damage or loss.
- Obtain as much information as possible in the circumstances. Details such as names, addresses, contact information and registration numbers will be vital later.
- Photos will prove to be very useful for you and the insurance company in helping a claim along.
- Initially, you need to take quick action, as far as possible, to safeguard the damaged property. For example, arrange for your vehicle to be moved to a secure place, or to “make safe” a damaged building by preventing access to open windows or damaged doors. Don’t wait for the insurance company approval for this vital, sensible, initial action.
- Do not accept liability for any damage, even if you feel responsible. An answer could be “Let’s leave that to the insurance companies”, or “let’s both just agree to keep contact to a minimum until respective claims are made.” Of course, sometimes, this is easier said than done.
- Report the loss or damage to us as soon as practical so we can start the process of the claim or appoint an assessor. If crime-related, the incident must be reported to the Police in the first instance.
- We will organise with you to have the relevant claim form completed. This is your Statement of Claim. This can be done by email, post or in our office.
- Remember to keep any relevant correspondence and notes you have made, as well as invoices and receipts.
- It is then up to us to liaise with and follow up with your insurance company on your behalf.
